Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple
Situated on the western bank of the holy River Ganga in Varanasi, the Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, which are temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The primary deity of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple is Lord Shiva, also known as Vishwanatha or Vishweshwarar, meaning ‘the ruler of the universe’. Varanasi, considered the cultural capital of India, is therefore often referred to as the city of Lord Shiva. The temple’s tower is adorned with 800 kg of gold plating.
Visitors are not allowed to bring cameras, mobile phones, or electronic devices inside the temple premises and must deposit them in lockers provided outside. Foreign tourists can enter through Gate number 2, allowing them to bypass the queue of Indian visitors waiting for their turn. Additionally, within the temple complex, there is a sacred well known as Jnana Vapi or the wisdom well, reserved for entry only by Hindus.
In ancient times, during special festivals like Shivaratri, the king of Kashi (Kashi Naresh) used to visit the temple for worship, during which no one else was allowed to enter the temple premises. Devotees were permitted to enter only after the king had finished his prayers. The significance of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple also lies in its mention in various sacred Hindu scriptures. The exterior of the temple is adorned with intricate carvings that give it a divine appearance. Additionally, the temple is home to several smaller shrines dedicated to deities such as Kaalbhairav, Vishnu, Virupaksh Gauri, Vinayaka, and Avimukteshwara.
Dashashwamedh Ghat
Dashashwamedh Ghat, located on the Ganges River in Varanasi, is a place of great religious importance and cultural richness. Ganga Aarti, Varanasi
The Ganga Aarti is a significant ritual that takes place every morning and evening on the banks of the sacred Ganges river on a grand scale. The event is held at the Dashashwamedh Ghat, where priests conduct the Aarti. The entire Ghat becomes radiant with a divine light that gives a strong spiritual feeling. The elaborate ritual includes large brass lamps fueled with oil and the priests reciting holy mantras that echo throughout the surroundings.
As night falls, the ghats of Varanasi burst into life with the vibrant Ganga Aarti. The priests, dressed in traditional attire, perform the ritual with precise movements, accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of bells and chanting of hymns. The main attraction is the shining brass lamps, known as diyas, which move gracefully in circular patterns, creating intricate designs against the darkening sky. The scent of incense and the sound of sacred mantras envelop the air, offering a deeply engaging experience.
Assi Ghat
The Assi Ghat is located at the meeting point of the Assi and Ganga Rivers and is renowned for the large Shiva Lingam situated beneath a peepal tree. This sacred site holds great religious significance and is referenced in Puranic texts and various legends. Serving as the heart of Varanasi, Assi Ghat attracts both locals and tourists who come to witness the breathtaking views of sunrise and sunset over the Ganges.
Many tourists and long-term visitors to Varanasi choose to reside near this Ghat, which is also a popular hangout spot for local youths in the evenings. Recently, morning Aarti ceremonies have commenced at the Ghat, offering a unique insight into the spiritual essence of Varanasi. Additionally, tourists often embark on boat rides from Assi to Dashaswamedh Ghat in the evening to observe the renowned Aarti ritual conducted there, providing an unforgettable experience.
Situated close to Banaras Hindu University, Assi Ghat is a frequented location for students as well.
